Having to "sign into each app separately instead" every few days

Every few days,  I'm unable to log into Windows 8.1 Mail.  Instead of going into Mail, I am presented with a screen that asks me to switch to a Microsoft account on this PC.  I have a Microsoft account, but I prefer to use a local account on this PC because I don't want to use my Microsoft password to log into my local account every time.  I select 'sign into each app separately instead (not recommended)', and enter my Microsoft account password.  But Every few days I keep having to do this - I'm suddenly unable to log into Windows 8.1 Mail, and I have to repeat this all over again.  Why won't the account stay logged on?  I do turn off my PC at night, but it usually remembers the Microsoft account info so I don't have to enter it again the next day.  But every few days, I have to do the above all over again.  What can I do to stay connected so I don't have to sign in to my Microsoft account over and over?

Hi,

As I known, the login information will be saved in credential manager once you login Mail app with Microsoft account seperately.

I considered that this issue can be caused if this record was removed by any schedule task or 3rd part security app.

Please first check running tasks on your computer:

  1. Open a command prompt. To open a command prompt, click Start , click All Programs , click Accessories , and then click Command Prompt .

  2. At the command prompt, type Taskschd.msc .

  3. In the Actions pane, click Display All Running Tasks . The Running Task dialog box will appear.

Check details to see if any task will remove the remembered saved credentials.

If not, what about the 3rd part security applications. If there is such app, please contact its support to know which scan or schedule maintanance will do such task.

In addition, to see whether this issue might be caused by corrupted windows components, please run following command to scan system also:

Please make sure to run CMD as Administrator:

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Hope these could be helpful.

Thank you for your reply.

I tried those suggestions but there was nothing that looked to me like it could cause the problem.  I assume this is a problem and not something Windows does deliberately. For example, I tried upgrading someone else's Vista PC to Windows 8.1, used a local account (standard user), made use of the Mail app with their accounts, and had the very same thing happen.  After about a week or so, they had to sign in again ('Sign into each app separately instead') before they could check their mail.

Under 'Generic Credentials' my computer shows something very similar to what you show in the image of your post:

'MicrosoftAccount:user=xxxxxxxxxxx@hotmail.com

User name: xxxxxxxxxxx@hotmail.com

Password:xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Persistence: Local Computer

The 'Modified: xx/xx/2015' shows today's date, when I had to sign-in again.

So even though this information persists and doesn't look like it changes at all, I still have to sign-in to my mail account again every few days or so.  The other non-Microsoft accounts I have linked to my Windows 8.1 Mail, don't require me to sign in again.

Hi,

This issue can be caused by Mail app or your Microsoft account or related system files corrupted.

Please first try the Account troubleshooter, any error please post back:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/2/4/F24D0C03-4181-4E5B-A23B-5C3A6B5974E3/microsoftaccounts.diagcab

If the issue still persists, please run following commands to repair your system:

Please make sure to run CMD as Administrator:

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

In addition, i suggest you test the issue under new user account on this computer and let me know the results.

Keep post.

Hi again,

I ran the accounts troubleshooter.  This is what happened:

"Microsoft account required"

"You need a Microsoft account to sync your setting"

I selected 'next' and after the troubleshooter ran some more I got this:

"Troubleshooter has completed"

"The troubleshooter made some changes to your system.  Try attempting the task you were trying to do before."

"Problems found"

"Microsoft account required ............Detected"

I am currently still signed in to the mail app though, and can access my email.  So I'm not sure why the troubleshooter gave the results it did.

I also ran the dism from an administrator command line and got these results:

"Error: 0x800f0906"

"The source files could not be downloaded."

"Use the "source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature.  For more information on specifying a source location, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId-243077."

"The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log"

I'll try creating a new user on this computer, but I find it odd that the very same setup (local account w/local password, Mail app using hotmail/live/outlook, etc.) on a different computer altogether (mentioned above) would result in the same problem.

Hi,

Regarding current information, we need to run the DISM command to repair your system:

For the command running error, please try following steps and then check if the DISM commands can run properly:

net stop wuauserv
cd %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution
ren Download Download.old
net start wuauserv
net stop bits
net start bits
net stop cryptsvc
cd %systemroot%\system32
ren catroot2 catroot2old
net start cryptsvc

If DISM fail to repair corrupted system image or it encounter the error again, please run System file checker to do further troubleshooting:

Run cmd as admin:

SFC /SCANNOW

Then, check your mail issue again.

Hi again,

I performed the steps above and DISM with the exact same results as before: 'error 0x800f0906'

After that I ran sfc /scannow with this result:

'Verification 100% complete'

'Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.  Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.  For example C:\WINDOWS\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.  Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios'

FWIW, so far, I have been able to open the Mail app after powering on the PC without having to sign in again, for the last day or two.

Hi,

Right now I haven't experienced the problem with my Microsoft account for over a week.  However, for the first time my Yahoo account (also through the Mail app) now sometimes requires me to sign-in to it before I can check that account's mail.  I don't know if there's any connection between the Microsoft account not needing me to sign-in now and the Yahoo account now requiring me to sign-in randomly like the Microsoft account was having me do. Should I still post the log files you requested regardless of their 'modified date' (i.e., even though I'm not asked to sign-in to the Microsoft account for the time being)?

Sorry, but I can't tell whether the answers are helping or not yet.

Hi again,

So far, I have not had to sign-in to my Microsoft account in the Mail app.  It looks like something in the suggstions above worked.

However, I'm now having to constantly (every day, sometimes more than once a day) sign-in to my non-Microsoft account.  Any ideas about what I should do now?  Try the above steps again?

Thanks.

Sounds like you are using a local account instead of a Microsoft account.  You should be using a MS account to log in and not a local account.  If you don't like having to put your password in each time while logging in there is away around that.

I have a Microsoft account, but I prefer to use a local account on this PC because I don't want to use my Microsoft password to log into my local account every time.

It is most likely because it's signed in as a local account and not an MS account attached to the profile.  This would make sense.  I'll verify it but I feel like this is most likely the issue.

What is the way around that?

Yes I am a user with a local account, not a microsoft account.  But the problem is not very consistent.  So I don't understand why the problem is caused by my being a local account, but using my Hotmail account for the Mail app.  Wouldn't the Mail app always require me to sign in with my Hotmail account user name and password if simply being a local account is causing the problem?

Since this issue appears to be due to the configuration of the Mail app rather than Windows, I would suggest asking this question in the Windows Store forum on Microsoft Community.

The Windows Store forum on Microsoft Community is where any questions regarding configuration or use of any built-in apps for Windows 8.1, such as Mail, Calendar, etc. should be asked.

The MS account syncs all your settings including mail app so you don't have to keep putting in passwords. Since you don't have an MS account that info does not sync. You are best to make an MS account and change it so you don't have to put a password or just make a pin if you really dislike putting your password in each time you log in.

Since this issue appears to be due to the configuration of the Mail app rather than Windows...

Could you briefly explain why it appears to be due to the configuration of the Mail app?  It works fine for a while (usually several weeks).  Then all of a sudden, the Mail app doesn't seem to have my Microsoft account ID and password stored anymore and starts prompting me for it whenever I start the Mail app.  Then, maybe after a few days of doing this, it no longer requests my Microsoft ID and password when starting the Mail app.  Everything is fine again.  Without me changing a thing.

Since my last post, I sign into my standard user account with a local password, and the Mail app has my Microsoft account and password stored and doesn't request it when starting the app.  So far, so good.  But this 'on again off again' problem has been happening for many months now.

I do have a Microsoft Account, it's my Hotmail account.  Because it's not local, I use a long password for it.  But locally, I don't want to have to enter a long password each time I sign in to my local account on this device, so I just use the local (short) password.  This works fine for a while, then for some reason the Mail app starts requesting my credentials again... until it doesn't after a few days to weeks.  And the cycle continues.

Yes but its attaching the MS account to your profile is what syncs everything.  There is away to not have to enter the password in everything or you can just create a pin.

Long story short. Attach your local account to the MS account and I'll show you how you don't have to enter your password everytime

My email syncs fine with my other Windows 8 PCs using my hotmail ID just for the Mail app on each.  That's not a problem.

But I will try using a MS account and a pin.

Thanks

Yes but its attaching the MS account to your profile is what syncs everything.  There is away to not have to enter the password in everything or you can just create a pin.

Long story short. Attach your local account to the MS account and I'll show you how you don't have to enter your password everytime

My email syncs fine with my other Windows 8 PCs using my hotmail ID just for the Mail app on each.  That's not a problem.

But I will try using a MS account and a pin.

Thanks

When you sign in with a Microsoft Account, your credentials are stored by Windows and used automatically by the Microsoft Store and Windows Store Apps (including built-in apps like Mail, Calendar, etc.). When you sign in with a Local Account, your credentials are stored in each Windows Store App and the Microsoft Store individually.

If your issue is just that you dont want to enter your Microsoft Account password at each login, but the behavior of signing you in automatically to the Store, Mail, Calendar, etc. is desired, the PIN suggestion from aw00t is a great option.

If your issue is that you dont want to be signed in with your Microsoft Account, but you want the Mail app to retain your credentials and not prompt you on occasion for your password, then you may need to ask for further support in the Windows Store forum on Microsoft Community, where you will receive better support for the Mail app.

This is precisely the problem.  I will ask in the Windows Store forum.

Thank you.
